I wrote a book about reading to babies–and it’s been months since Lily has really let me read to her. She brings books, yes–but after a page she’s off for another book. She’d rather “read” to herself–and she does, she sits and talks and turns the pages–but like everything else, she just doesn’t want anyone to do it for her.
But tonight, ar long last, she let me read. I happened to grab a handful of board books she hadn’t seen in a while (Blue Hat, Green Hat; 10 Hungry Monsters and Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?) and she actually sat in my lap and enjoyed. It probobly helped that two let her chime in on the “moos” and the “oops”, but we read the long poem one twice, happily.
I’m really hoping this is the start of a new era.
Incidentally, here are a few things she liked even during her non-reading days:any book she could yell or sing along to (No, David, nursery rhymes), pop-ups, occasional baby faces and books from tv shows if the text was short enough.
You know, we kept at it. Every day, at least once and usually more often, somebody sat down and participated in her version of reading a book. And now there’s some hope that we’ll actually read. I’m feeling really good about that!

Both N and K started letting me read a LOT more to them after they turned two. I’m not sure why, but I could barely get either of them to read with me until then. They both just have a lot of energy. Too busy to sit still and read!

I often wonder if I’ll ever get annoyed with my girls for always sitting around with their noses in a book (I totally imagine they will do that like we used to do it when they are a little older. I remember my Mom telling me to STOP reading. I sure hope I don’t ever tell them that.)
