This morning features a group of about 10 people exercising together.
E, R, San, Se they count. I don’t think they would like it if we
joined them. One Chinese American joined in, but briefly. These are the famed morning exercises, done at schools, factories, businesses, and they all know the routine, but they applaud their leader anyway.
It’s hot today, hot hot hot. When one of the kids runs across the (empty, fenced) parking lot I want to melt; I can’t believe they can move. We play with trucks in the shade. I leave Sam and Wyatt alone to take Lily to the bathroom and come back–they’re gone! And so, in an instant, is my panic. Where would they have gone? Who could possibly have taken them? They’ll never be safer than they are here.

How frightening but yes–they will never be safer than where they are right now. The guards would make sure of that.
